Being able to study the course material in your own language significantly increases the comprehension and learning, even if you can understand the English text with some effort.
The EAC project therefore encourages translation of the course material for use in national training, and contributes in this activity by providing the manuscripts and building the online modules.
In order to protect the integrity and quality of the course content, a set of conditions have been established. Further information and more detailed instructions can be obtained from the EASO Centre for Training, Quality and Expertise.
Conditions:
The following conditions have to be met.
- The translation cost is covered by the translating country/group.
- When a new English version is available, a translated version of a module must be updated correspondingly. The existing version must not be used for new training.
- Internal or external resources may be used for the translation activity. If external recourses are used, copyright issues are handled in the contract along with a non-disclosure paragraph.
- The manuscript to translate must be obtained from the EAC office.
- The translation must be quality controlled by an independent expert to secure the content is not altered or distorted. The quality control should also include the language style to secure consistency between modules. The expert is appointed and financed by the translating country/group, and approved by the EAC team in advance. (Detailed requirements are described in a separate document.)
- The EAC team reserves the right to use the translated version at its own discretion.
- A national contact person for translations and updates should be appointed.
Procedure (to be completed step by step in this order):
- The translation project information sheet is completed and sent to the EAC office.
- A CV or other document describing the position, experience and knowledge of the suggested translation quality controller is sent to the EAC team for approval. (See requirements on knowledge and experience in separate document.)
- The time plan is agreed and the quality controller approved.
- The EAC team sends the current version of the manuscript to the contact person.
- The manuscript and all accompanying documents are translated. (See the translation instructions for details.)
- The translation is quality controlled by the approved independent asylum and language expert(s), and the quality certificate is signed and returned to the EAC office.
- The complete translated and quality checked manuscript is sent to the EAC office in MS Word format (zipped if necessary).
- The translated course is built on the online platform according to the time plan.
- The online course is checked and approved by the translation project.
